Afoot

Walks, runs, hikes, and rides, recorded without pressing start each time

Afoot is an iOS app that records your movement all day. It tells walking, running, cycling, and driving apart by itself. There's no account and no server, and everything stays on your device.

What it does

Frequently asked questions

Recording stopped on its own.

When memory runs low, iOS shuts down apps in the background. Afoot then restores the session and keeps recording. If it can't, it sends you a notification. Starting with version 1.4.0, there's no Activity notifications switch, so you'll always get this notification. You can still turn it off in iOS Settings → Notifications → Afoot, but then you won't get place alert or workout notifications either. Afoot also stops recording after 2 hours without movement to save battery, and sends a notification when it does.

Why does it need “Always” location access?

Recording keeps going in the background with “While Using the App” too. “Always” is only needed for Place alerts. Otherwise, Afoot uses location only while a recording session is running, and stops as soon as you press Stop. If you've saved places in Place alerts, iOS notices when you enter or leave one, even when you're not recording. For a Distance alerts place, Afoot also turns on GPS once you're inside the radius, until you arrive or leave. Turning a place off or deleting it stops both. Afoot doesn't collect your location or send anything to us. The privacy policy lists what goes to Apple for maps and place search.

Does it drain the battery?

Afoot uses GPS while recording, so it does use power. When you stop moving, iOS pauses location updates on its own, and GPS goes off when you press Stop. After that, if you've saved places, iOS just does a low-power check for when you enter or leave one. GPS comes back on only while you're inside the radius of a Distance alerts place and haven't arrived yet.

How is a workout different from automatic recording?

Automatic recording runs in the background all day. A workout is a single outing you start yourself, and you can give it a goal. On the Today screen, tap Workout, pick an activity (Cycling, Walk / Run, or Hiking) and a goal (Free, Distance, Time, or Destination), and start. With Voice updates on, Afoot speaks up at the distance or time interval you pick. It tells you how much of your goal is left, your average pace, and your pace over the last interval. On a ride you hear speed instead of pace. Recording keeps going after you reach the goal, until you tap End workout. Then Afoot saves the activities as one collection with distance, average pace or speed, moving time, ascent, cadence, and calories.

With a Destination goal, the workout ends without you tapping End workout. On a one-way trip that's when you reach the last destination. On a round trip it's when you're back at the start after visiting every stop. Your daily recording pauses during the workout. It picks up again when you end the workout, or when a Destination goal ends it. If the workout ended itself after 2 hours without movement, daily recording stays off and the notification tells you so. Tap Start tracking to turn it back on.

How are workout calories calculated?

Afoot uses the weight, age, and sex you enter in Settings → Body info for workout calories. It looks at the activity type and your speed to judge how hard you were working, and scales that by your weight. Then it adds your resting burn, which it works out from your weight, age, and sex. The number you see is an estimate. If you leave these blank, workouts still record, but the calorie numbers are rougher. What you enter stays on your device and isn't used for anything else.

Can it stop recording at home or at the office?

Yes. On the Today screen, open Place alerts and add a place. Search the map, or drag the map under the pin to set where it is, then pick a radius between 100 m and 5 km. You can save up to 20 places. If a place is set to Pause recording, Afoot stops recording while you're inside the radius. When you leave, it picks the same session back up. If you want this visit recorded after all, tap Record here.

My distance alert doesn't show on the Lock Screen right away.

The live distance on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island is a Live Activity, and iOS only lets an app start one while the app is on screen. When you enter the radius, you get a notification that says “tap to show the live distance.” Tapping it opens Afoot, and that's when the Live Activity starts. After that it keeps updating, even with the app closed. You get the notifications either way. A place set to Distance alerts notifies you when you enter the radius and at each distance you added under Alerts on the way (up to 5). You also get one when you're within 30 m of the place, and one if you leave the radius before you get there.

How do photos and videos end up in a collection?

In a collection, tap Show photos and videos from this trip and Afoot asks for read access to your photo library. It adds photos and videos you took during the collection's activities, or up to 2 minutes before or after one. If a photo has a location, it has to be within 300 m of the route. If it doesn't, Afoot places it on the route by the time you took it, unless you took it after the collection's last activity ended. Screenshots and files exported from Afoot are skipped. Afoot does the matching on your device and uploads nothing. It also works if you only allow access to some of your photos. You can hide an item or remove it from the collection. Removing it leaves the original in your photo library, and Afoot won't add it again.

Can I export a collection as a photo or video?

Yes. In a collection, tap ⋯ → Export to make a single image or a video. In the video the map follows the route and your photos appear for a moment. Videos from the collection play with their original sound. Pick 9:16, 1:1, or 16:9. An Afoot watermark goes in the bottom-right corner. When it's ready, tap Save to Photos or Save to Files.

Can I move my data to another app?

Yes. On the Activities screen, use ⋯ → Export GPX to save the selected activity as a GPX file. GPX is a standard format, and most fitness and map apps can open it.
